Which eye do you shoot with? Right or left?

About 10 years ago, on the then still cheerfully functioning photo server Photopost, I started a poll in the forum on the topic „Which eye do photographers look into the viewfinder with“. There were lots of reactions, and it turned out that almost everyone always shoots with just one eye, some with the right, others with the left. Supporters of both „views“ couldn’t understand how anyone could look with a different eye than they do.

Just a few days ago we remembered this topic at home again. I should probably add that I shoot invariably with my left eye, Lída with her right for a change. Looking into the viewfinder with the left eye is completely natural for me and I can’t do it any other way. I can hardly even close the left eye and look with the right. Today I took a test that is going around Facebook right now and reveals which part of the brain you use. I got an extreme result (see the picture), pointing out that I make strong use of the right hemisphere. Among other things, that is connected with using the left eye. And, as you can see in the picture, also with creativity, intuition, imagination, curiosity, but also chaos. My result was 9 to 91% in favour of the right hemisphere.

And as if that weren’t enough, Lída came today saying she had tried shooting with her left eye (her result in the test later showed a balanced 47/53) and was surprised that composing was much easier for her than when she shoots with the right.

How about you? Which eye do you shoot with, and have you tried the other one?

Come and discuss it at a nude photography workshop.
